Lesson 6: The Definite Article & Second Declension

In Lesson 6 of How to Read Biblical Greek, Dr. Abidan Shah reviews the definite article and goes deeper into the second declension — the most common noun pattern in the Greek New Testament. Because Greek is an inflected language, the ending of a word tells you what job it's doing in the sentence, which means the word order can move around freely without changing the meaning.

Working through the name Jesus, Dr. Shah shows how a single word shifts form depending on whether it's the subject, being addressed, the object, or showing possession — and why, when two forms look identical, context is what tells you the difference. He walks through the definite article for both masculine and neuter nouns, explains why masculine and neuter belong to the same second declension family, and closes with a full vocabulary set including prophetes (prophet), kaleo (to call), soma (body), laos (people), agapao (to love), egeiro (to raise up), phone (voice), zoe (life), apostello (to send forth), doulos (servant), and ballo (to throw).

Along the way he makes the case for why Greek is worth studying at all — from a nineteenth-century Oxford grammarian named Monro to the reminder that Jesus, Peter, Paul, and James all wrote and spoke in Greek. You can be saved and grow in English, but the more you grow, the more you'll want to know what the New Testament actually said.

Dr. Shah writes a personal letter every week — reflections on Scripture, faith, and living it out with clarity and purpose. Join the family: https://abidanshah.com/join
